Jewellery designer Alpana Gujral showcases her latest collection called Mahzarin. Mostly we share our creative perspective. I love to see my clients looking and feeling beautiful. It is important for me to see them happy and beautiful. How you look is a reflection of how you feel and wearing jewellery is an immediate feel good accessory.

In Bangalore to promote her collection grandiosely titled ‘La Bella Mascherata’, Alpana says, “To be his daughter is a stepping stone but one has to be good in one’s work to be able to take it forward.” She readily concurs however that there are quite a few lessons she has learnt from her world – renowned artist father.

“I have learnt a sense of colour, style, modesty,” she adds.

Alpana reveals that jewellery designing did not happen by chance. As she tells us “My mother used to design jewellery pieces when I was a kid and that is how I got into it.” She adds profoundly, “Jewellery designing for me is my form of expressing art.”

It’s a family brimming with prodigious talent.

Alpana’s brand of jewellery is contemporary and many different nuances to it.

“There is no one place I look to for inspiration,” she says when asked what inpires her creations.

“Yes, there is always nature. One gets an abundant ideas from nature and you can never tire out of creating nature - based designs. “I create collections based on whatever catches my fancy at that time. I have no set rules. It can even be colour that inspires me.” She then cites the collection she had done two years ago.

Titled Mood Indigo, the entire range was around the colour Indigo. 

TRADITION MEETS GLOBAL

Alpana keeps herself updated about the world trends in jewellery designing and this also includes researching on old jewellery from every culture.

In his career he has had the opportunity to create many campaigns and activations with top brands. He left that world to pursue his lifelong passion for event design. However while designing her creations she tries to “evolve international designs into what works for the Indian ethos.”

Commenting on the Indian woman today and her changing tastes in jewellery, Alpana remarks “The Indian woman today is widely traveled and is exposed to global trends, so she is open to contemporary designs.” She however feels that “Indian traditional jewellery is not trend driven.” Verily why, while conceptualizing designs she tends to “keep a certain aspect of tradition in mind so that it doesn’t take away the intrinsic value of the piece.”

THE COLLECTION

La Bella Mascherata – her current collection is designed around the Italian Masquerade.

As she explains, “I chose the theme of masquerade because there is an element of mystery and a certain joie de vivre it represents. The festive season is around the corner and I think the various elements that a masquerade represents goes well with the festive season.”
